In the Renaissance, oral, written, and print media competed for dominance. Each influenced the others, and each became a means of ideological expression. The best minds of the Renaissance did not choose one medium over another but used them all. The best minds of the next generations will draw on print and television. Theirs will be a new literacy influenced by all available media, not relying on one alone. It will be a different literacy, not a worse literacy than our own. The alternative to television is not a return to the age of print but dead air in the mind.
